Koos Uys got involved with the first developments for the Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley.

This project was a career highlight. The client was by far the most competent of all he worked with, as was the professional teams.

With such high competence and everyone working in true team spirit, beautiful buildings were delivered in time.

This was not the first, but by far the largest application of Thermally Activated Building Structures in South Africa, and probably also in the world. This systems are fairly popular in Europe and the USA, but installation methods had to be revised for South African construction conditions.

Although this method was not implemented in before the 2000's, evidence of the use there off already dates back to the 1930's.

This project was run on the NEC3 contract and an interesting character of this project is that a consulting team is appointed for a period of 3 years, in which time the client can assign projects to the team without going through a procurement process for each project.

As a result, consulting teams that performed well, was also in line to get the most work - and so it happened.

On the Central Campus, a total of 9 Buildings, as well as 2 services buildings, were erected over a period of 8 years.

Koos Uys served for 2 consecutive NEC contracts, and managed to do the mechanical designs for 7 of the 9 central campus buildings, as well as both services buildings.

The construction values for the buildings were well over R 1 Billion, with mechanical services alone over R 70 million.
